As Italy battle to end a 48-year wait to win the European Championship, three of the country’s most decorated players are preparing themselves for a different sporting challenge: the Costa Smeralda Invitational.
Former Juventus hitman Alessandro Del Piero, who scored 27 international goals, Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola and newly-appointed Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo will all be at the beautiful Pevero Golf Club on Saturday June 25 for the star-studded event.
Joining other stars from the world of sports and entertainment, the Italian trio will be welcomed by European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke, as the field comes together to raise money for the Road to Awareness campaign in aid of UNICEF. Last year’s winner, Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev, will be the man to beat as the 3-handicapper returns to the scene of his 2015 triumph.
Del Piero might be inclined to confide in Di Matteo and Zola before his first tee shot at Pevero, as both former Premier League stars competed in the first Costa Smeralda Invitational, held at Pevero last year.
The weekend will also include a clinic from Clarke and a ‘Beat the Pro’ contest with the Ryder Cup captain, and a Gala Dinner following the tournament. During the competition there will be a number of fun challenges for the stars to take on, whilst an exclusive partner’s programme, including spa treatments and winery tour, is also on offer.
Last year’s event raised over £100,000 for the children’s charities Autism Rocks and Road to Awareness in aid of UNICEF. This year the Costa Smeralda Invitational is proud to partner with UNICEF again to support its domestic and international humanitarian work.
