Ryder Cup hero Justin Rose will headline a glittering cast of sports and entertainment stars at a new charity tournament poised to showcase Sardinia’s spectacular Pevero Golf Club to the world.
The 2013 U.S. Open champion and current world No.6 was today officially unveiled as host of the inaugural Costa Smeralda Invitational to be held at Pevero GC, host of the 1978 Italian Open, on June 27.
Rose’s highly-anticipated appearance will come just days after the 34-year-old Englishman attempts to capture a second major championship title at this year’s U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in Washington.
From the cauldron of Chambers Bay, Rose can look forward to unwinding at an event that promises to mix the important business of raising funds for charity with the pleasure of playing Pevero GC. With stunning views over the turquoise Mediterranean Sea from every hole, Pevero GC has been a magnet in the Porto Cervo region of Costa Smeralda since its opening in 1972.
Rose will host an impressive list of sports and entertainment icons at the Celebrity-Am tournament with a cause. Indeed, the Costa Smeralda Invitational will raise funds for two great causes, children’s charities UNICEF and Autism Rocks.
“It’s an honour to be invited to host the inaugural Costa Smeralda Invitational,” said Rose.
“I have no doubt this can become one of Europe’s leading charity golf tournaments each summer. I can’t wait to see Pevero Golf Club and to help raise money for both Autism Rocks and UNICEF.”
The Costa Smeralda Invitation will see 18 celebrities captain teams of VVIPs and business leaders in a stableford competition around the 6717-yard, par 72 Pevero GC. As well as hoping to lead their fourball to the teams’ title, the celebrities will be gunning for individual glory with Rose to present the celebrity champion with the Costa Smeralda Invitational’s coveted Blue Jacket.
The entire field will get the opportunity to test their game against Rose with the reigning Scottish Open champion to host a “Beat the Pro” competition on Pevero GC’s par 3 17th hole.
Rose will also host a private clinic for the 18 celebrity captains – who will be announced on June 26 – prior to the tournament’s 12 noon shotgun start.
Pevero Golf Club Director Marco Berio is thrilled Rose, the winner of seven titles on each of the European and PGA Tours, has agreed to lend his name to the tournament.
“We are humbled that Justin has agreed to become the founding host of our tournament and to have such a brilliant headline talent for the inaugural Costa Smeralda Invitational only highlights how serious we are about this wonderful charity event,” said Mr. Berio.
“We are very proud of our course, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Snr, and hope the Costa Smeralda Invitational becomes an annual showcase of the club to the world as well as promoting the many other delights that the Porta Cervo regional and Sardinia as a whole has to offer.”
Tournament Director Jamie Cunningham echoed Mr. Berio’s sentiments and promises a memorable event for the celebrities and VVIPs set to rub shoulders with Rose.
The Costa Smeralda Invitational will be bookended by an official welcome dinner on June 25 and a stylish gala dinner following the golf. An exclusive partner’s programme – including the option of a spa treatment, a winery tour, horse riding and water sports – will run parallel to the golf tournament.
“I’d like to thank Pevero Golf Club and Costa Smeralda for the opportunity to create such an exciting sporting event in one of the most spectacular locations on the planet,” Mr. Cunningham said.
“We are looking forward to raising a lot of money for our very worthy charities, UNICEF and Autism Rocks, and ensuring our VVIP guests and partners enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
