Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev is the inaugural Costa Smeralda Invitational champion after mastering the testing challenge of Pevero Golf Club.
The two-handicapper scored 37 stableford points to top the individual celebrity leaderboard by three from Italian and Chelsea superstar Gianfranco Zola. West Indian batting god Brian Lara and former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke shared third place on 31 points.
Dev was later presented with the champion’s Zegna Blue Jacket by tournament host and Hublot ambassador Justin Rose at the tournament’s glitzy Gala Dinner at Hotel Cala di Volpe.
Sky News sports presenter Sarah-Jane Mee won the ladies title with 23 points on a day when the entire field were tested by the Robert Trent Jones Snr design with its spectacular views out across the Med and Costa Smeralda.
Each of the celebrities led fourballs of VIP guests and business leaders in the battle for the teams’ title where the best two scores counted on each hole, apart from the par 3s where all four players’ scores contributed. Ladies European Tour professional Caroline Martens (Norway) captained the team of Jonathan Burke, Anthony Miles Sinclair and Roger Lehman to glory on 87 points.
Team Martens finished just a point clear of former A.C. Milan star Daniele Massaro and his team of Franco Carraro, Tina Buganza and Emanuela Piccinini while Lara skippered his team of Scott Davies, Daniel Bardgett and Michael Gwilliam to third place with 85 points.
The men’s and ladies longest drive prizes on Pevero Golf Club’s uphill, into-the-wind par 4 ninth hole were claimed by footballer Les Ferdinand (273 yards) and Silvia Valli (195 yards) respectively.
The inaugural Costa Smeralda Invitational raised more than €135,000 for official tournament charities Autism Rocks and UNICEF Road to Awareness.
