This year’s European Championship may have been a disappointment for the Ukraine football team, but their assistant manager and all-time top goalscorer Andriy Shevchenko will be attempting to bounce back this weekend at the Costa Smeralda Invitational in Sardinia.
The Ukrainian national team recorded losses against Germany, Northern Ireland and Poland at Euro 2016, however on Saturday (25 June) Shevchenko will look to erase those memories when he tees it up at the Pevero Golf Club in Sardinia to play in the Costa Smeralda Invitational.
Touted to be the next Ukrainian national team manager following the conclusion of the tournament in France, Shevchenko may learn some management tips from Costa Smeralda Invitational host Darren Clarke, who is just months away from captaining the cream of European golf at the 2016 Ryder Cup.
The former AC Milan and Chelsea striker, who has an impressive two handicap, will be one of the men to beat in this year’s charity event. He joins a number of other high-profile names who’ll be testing their golf skills on the beautiful Italian island this weekend, including actor James Nesbitt, DJ Jamie Theakston, former footballers Alessandro Del Piero and Gianfranco Zola, and last year’s winner, Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev.
All 18 competing stars from the world of sport and entertainment will be joining forces to raise money for the Road to Awareness campaign in aid of UNICEF. A number of fun challenges will be staged throughout the event to generate money for the charity, including a ‘Beat the Pro’ contest with Clarke and a glamorous Gala Dinner in the evening.
Last year’s Costa Smeralda – hosted by Justin Rose – raised over £100,000 for the children’s charities Autism Rocks and Road to Awareness in aid of UNICEF. This year the Costa Smeralda Invitational is proud to support the Road to Awareness campaign in aid of UNICEF, with all money raised going towards UNICEF’s vital water, sanitation and hygiene programmes.
